What it isn't : it isn't a park to discover from the comfort of your car. It is not a place for those looking for a full hook up. I would not recommend driving an RV on these roads, too narrow. If you need hot water, electricity, wifi, cell service, good restaurants, shops, bars, or anything you couldn't buy in 1875 this place is not for you. Go to Yellowstone.
What it is : 87,000 acres of Northern Maine woods complete with dusty logging roads. A few campsites with a pit toilet and no modern facilities. A road system with parking and scenic views. Trails up mountains, roads through the woods. Experienced canoeists will delight in running the east branch of the Penobscot river. Hunt and snowmobile east of the river, peace and quiet west of the river. The park facilities are the best designed anywhere, truly a work of art. I repeatedly burst out laughing with joy upon discovering a new wonder in the park.
Maine's newest national monument. Still in the early stages. A spectacular view of katahdin and so much more.. Miles of logging roads that no longer allow motor vehicles, so bike or walk to your hearts content. Mountains to climb, streams and rivers galore.
